BACKGROUND: |
The Ohio EPA will present the Encouraging Environmental Excellence (E3) Gold Level Award to the USPS Toledo Service Area during a ceremony at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, at the Crowne Plaza North Columbus, 6500 Doubletree Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43229. The award recognizes organizations that have comprehensive environmental stewardship programs. In support of the USPS National Recycling Initiative, USPS Northern Ohio District Recycling Coordinator Leo Brenot designed and oversaw a plan that included the participation of 196 postmasters and station and branch managers in the Toledo service area. In four months, recycling volume rose from 8 tons a month to more than 50 tons a month. “By replacing trash containers with recycling containers, we achieved a 90 percent reduction in disposable waste,” said Brenot. “Sustainability is a win-win for the Postal Service and the environment. We all need to do our part.” The Ohio EPA defines environmental stewardship as reducing the impact of business or organizational activities on the environment beyond measures required by any permit or rule, producing a better environment, conserving natural resources and resulting in long-term economic benefits. The Toledo Service Area has previously received the Postmaster General Sustainability Globe Award for excellence in recycling and recognition from Ohio Governor John Kasich for environmental stewardship. The Postal Service is integrating sound environmental business practices into its day-to-day operations to deliver a greener tomorrow. |
