Due to a decline in demand, many post offices no longer offer extended retail and/or collection hours for last-minute filers on for the federal and state tax filing deadline. As the number of taxpayers who file electronically continues to rise, the number of people filing tax returns at the last-minute has fallen and the Postal Service has seen less of a necessity to offer special extended services on the IRS federal and Oklahoma state tax filing deadline, which falls on Monday, April 18 this year.
Postal customers waiting until the deadline date to mail their federal and/or state tax return should verify April 18 retail and collection hours with their local post office.
It's important to pay attention to the posted mail collection hours, as these can vary by post office and could directly affect a filer’s deadline for mailing a tax return on the April 18 tax filing deadline. Customers can also call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) for detailed information on April 18 post office hours, collection box times and mail pickups for their area.
Tax filers are strongly encouraged watch out for common tax-filing mailing mistakes, such as using the wrong amount of postage or writing the wrong address. It is important to use correct postage because the IRS will not accept postage due mail.
