USPS provides Oregon income tax filers options for Thursday, April 15 deadline

April 08, 2010

The United States Postal Service urges customers to avoid Thursday, April 15, deadline-day crowds by mailing their income tax returns early and ensuring each envelope carries the proper postage.

Purchase stamps during regular business hours for your tax returns at local retailers, contract postal units, online at usps.com, or at the Post Office.

For those who decide to wait until the deadline date, Post Offices in the Portland metropolitan area will collect and postmark tax returns until midnight on Thursday, April 15, 2010, only from blue Postal Service collection boxes in front of 20 designated Post Offices, Stations and Branches (a list of the locations is below).

These collection boxes will be marked with special yellow signs designating midnight pickup in front of only selected Post Offices. Other blue collection boxes without a yellow sign will be picked up at posted, regularly-scheduled times.

"The best option for those mailing their tax returns this year is to mail early, before the April 15th deadline,” said Portland Postmaster Shawneen Betha. “Those who decide to wait until April 15th must be sure to have correct postage affixed and use one of the blue collection boxes marked with yellow signs and located in front of designated Post Offices throughout the Portland area.”

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 26th in the 2008 Fortune 500.
