The United States Postal Service today sent a letter to Harbor Community Post Office Post Office Box customers to notify them that the contractor operating the Harbor Community Post Office at 97900 Shopping Center Ave., Brookings OR 97415, has notified the Postal Service of their decision to stop offering USPS services and close the Community Post Office, effective Jan. 30, 2015.
According to USPS Retail Manager Sheryl Scarbrough, current Harbor PO Box customers will not be required to change their mailing address, as they will be assigned a new PO Box at the Brookings Post Office, located at 711 Spruce St. Brookings, OR 97415.
Harbor PO Box customers will begin receiving mail delivery at their new PO Boxes at the Brookings Post Office on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015. Brookings Post Office PO Boxes are accessible to customers 24 hours a day. Instructions on how to exchange keys for the new PO Boxes have been provided to customers, Scarbrough added.
The USPS is actively seeking business owners who may be interested in establishing a new Contract Postal Unit (CPU) in the Harbor community, however, it would not offer PO Box delivery. A CPU is operated by a contractor within another business and offers select postal services, including postage stamps, Priority Mail service, First-Class Mail service at regular U.S. Postal Service prices.
Businesses or individuals in the Harbor area may request information about the requirements for hosting a CPU by contacting Scarbrough at (503) 294-2523. Scarbrough said the new CPU should be hosted within an existing business. Among the requirements for businesses to host a CPU is disabled accessibility.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
