BROOKINGS, OR — The U.S. Postal Service is advising that any residents of the Brookings area who have been forced to evacuate their homes because of the Chetco Bar Fire may pick up their mail at the Brookings Post Office, 711 Spruce St., Brookings, Ore. 97415, until further notice.

According to local postal officials, approximately 1,000 residential mail deliveries were expected to be inaccessible today as a result of roads being closed by local emergency officials. (A total of nearly 5,500 postal customers receive mail delivery via the Brookings Post Office.)

The Brookings Post Office’s retail hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. On Saturday, if necessary, customers may obtain their mail via the Post Office’s “Dutch door” between 12 noon and 3 p.m.

Customers are asked to present photo identification to obtain their mail.

Decisions on future changes to mail delivery will be made and updated after consulting with local emergency managers and law enforcement officials.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
