Puerto Rico and USVI Post Offices Adjusting Holiday Hours

December 21, 2010

SAN JUAN, PR — Post Offices in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will be open Christmas Eve, Friday, December 24, and New Year’s Eve, Friday, December 31, but most will have shortened retail lobby hours and close at noon.  Revised hours will be posted at each Post Office and commercial customers are asked to check with their Business Mail Entry Unit for December 24 and December 31 hours of operation.

Customers may go online to usps.com or call 1-800-ASK-USPS for information about specific Post Offices.  In addition, mail should be deposited into blue collection mailboxes before noon for early pickup on December 24 and December 31.  Customers requiring postal services later that day are encouraged to contact their local Postmaster.

Post Offices will be closed Saturday, December 25, and Saturday, January 1.  Only Express Mail will be delivered on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.  Normal mail delivery and Post Office retail hours will resume on Monday, December 27 after the Christmas holiday weekend and Monday, January 3 after the New Year’s Eve holiday weekend.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
