SAN JUAN — Post Offices across Puerto Rico will open for full retail and delivery service on Constitution Day, Wednesday, July 25.

But 27 post offices that offer passports are assigning extra resources on the holiday to help families secure passports ahead of seasonal needs like school, work or winter holiday travels.

“Securing a passport is a family affair when you consider the many documents that are sometimes required to document citizenship or parental authority,” explains Lisa Ojeda, District Manager for the Postal Service’s Caribbean District.  “Taking advantage of a holiday in the middle of week, some families may find it convenient to gather what they need and visit a nearby post office as part of the day.  We are putting extra resources in our passport acceptance locations to help.”

How much will my passport cost?

First-time passport applications have two types of basic fees: The application acceptance fee and the application processing fee. Passport photos and fees for faster processing are extra.

Application acceptance fees vary by type of passport requested – adult passport book ($110), adult passport card ($30), youth passport book ($80), youth passport card ($15) and renewals (and card combo ($140).  There are also fees for renewals.

This State Department payment is sent with your application package. State Department fees are paid separately from postal fees. You may not pay State Department fees with credit or debit cards. You may pay with personal, certified, cashiers, or traveler's check payable to "U.S. Department of State."

A $35 postal application processing fee is paid in person at the Post Office by check or money order payable to "Postmaster," debit card, or credit card.

  • Postal officials report that passport photos are available at these locations for $15.  One photo per passport is now required.

4 helpful tips for applying for a passport

  • Fill out the application (DS11), before coming to the Post Office — but don’t sign it
  • Bring proof of U.S. citizenship – provide one of the following:
  • Previous fully valid U.S. passport
  • Certified U.S. birth certificate
  • Consular report of birth abroad or birth certificate
  • Certificate of naturalization or citizenship
  • Proof of identity (one of these): valid driver’s license – government employee identification – military identification
  • For children under age 16, both parents must authorize the issuance of the child's passport. The best way to do this is for both parents/guardians to go with the child in person to apply for the passport.   A full discussion on special circumstances for children under 16 is available at the State Department website – www. travel.state.gov

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
