Monday is Turkey Day In Eau Claire — Herb Garvin Delivers Again!

November 19, 2010

COLUMBIA — On Monday morning, Nov. 22, I will be “slinging birds” with Eau Claire City Carrier, Herb Garvin as we have both scheduled annual leave to deliver two trucks’ worth--190 turkeys (and greens this year) to the needy people on his route.

You may remember Herb from last year’s story in The State newspaper, not only is he an outstanding Postman, (recognized for saving a customer’s life in ’09) for the past 10 years he has reached out to his needy customers with a holiday bird at his own expense.

With a surprise donation of over $1700 from employees of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Health Benefit Program presented by Executive Director Walter O’Malley on Oct. 28, and an additional $500 from NALC Local 233, it will definitely be the best year ever for turkey in Eau Claire.

If you’re looking for an authentic Thanksgiving holiday story, complete with food, love and some very grateful people, please call me on my cell phone (803-513-6186) and I’ll let you know where to look for us.  As Herb says, “Sometimes the best gift is being able to give one to somebody else.”

Herb moves pretty fast, so your best bet would be to call before lunch!

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
