SHOVEL READY: Left to right, Holtschlag, Davis and Gilmore discuss landscaping project on the pedestrian plaza at Columbia’s Main Post Office.

On Saturday, October 29 at the Columbia Main Post Office, 1601 Assembly St., a special landscaping project will begin at 9 a.m. that will bring beauty, pride, and improvement to the quality of life for visitors and residents of the City of Columbia, as well as its Postal employees and Postal customers.

Acting Columbia Postmaster, Joe Singh and Postal Architect/Engineer Luella Gilmore will welcome Roger Davis, Director of Operations, and Karel Givens, Vice President, Administration and Development, of City Center Partnership, Inc., whose organization will plant and maintain the green space until it is established; and Ann Holtschlag, President of Columbia Green, whose organization will sponsor the plants and whose members will supply volunteer labor.

The one-day project entails landscaping the planters along the railings in front of the building, a space of approximately 1,400 sq. ft.  Volunteers from the Downtown Neighborhood Association will also participate in the planting.

The project began when Gilmore contacted Holtschlag to discuss a potential project.  Holtschlag agreed to help, and invited City Center Partnership to be involved.

“These organizations are doing great things for Columbia,” said Gilmore, “and when they both said they would sponsor our efforts to improve the appearance of the pedestrian plaza at the Main Post Office, we welcomed the opportunity to work with them.  This project will make a big difference.”

Approximately 100 plants will be installed, including Carissa hollies, yucca, windmill palms and lantana.  The low maintenance, environmentally friendly landscape plan was designed by Rebekah Kline of Rebekah’s Garden.
