Orange Mound celebrates 125 years!

MEMPHIS, TN – It was established in 1890 as the first African-American neighborhood in the United States where blacks could build and purchase homes. And now it’s celebrating another milestone – 125 years!

In the 2013 documentary A Community called Orange Mound, Beulah Baptist Church pastor, Rev. Anthony Henderson, said “Orange Mound was and is a place where people can feel connected and even loved. Growing up, we felt that love. We felt supported in that community.”

The love will continue during a special ceremony to mark the anniversary at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2 at the historic Melrose High School, 2870 Deadrick Ave., where the Postal Service will unveil a special cancellation.

“The Postal Service is honored to have a role in the celebration of this neighborhood’s amazing history,” said Memphis Postmaster Jennifer Vo. “We thought a special postmark would be a great keepsake for Memphis residents.”

The special cancellation will be available at Lamar postal station, 1458 S. Trezevant St., from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Customers also can obtain the collectible postmark by sending their stamped cards or letters in a larger stamped envelope to: Orange Mound Station, Attn: Pam Kimble, 555 S. Third St., Memphis, TN 38101-9998. It will be available for 30 days beginning May 2.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
