Background: |
The U.S. Postal Service expects to deliver 850 million packages during the 2017 holiday season. That’s an anticipated 10% increase over last year’s volume. The week of Dec. 18 through Dec. 24 will be the busiest mailing, shipping, and delivery week for holiday packages, letters and cards. More than 180 million packages are expected to be delivered during the busiest week — roughly 26 million packages each day. The holidays are now hi-tech as customers register for the newest Postal Service feature – Informed Delivery. Informed Delivery allows residential users to view digital images of their incoming letter mail before it is delivered to their address. Additionally, more than 3 million customers are expected to use Click-N-Ship this year to ship from the convenience of their home or office at www.usps.com. Mailing early is the key to beating the rush. Customers should take note of the following mail-by deadlines:
Post Offices nationwide will be closed on Christmas Eve, Sunday, Dec. 24 and New Year’s Eve, Sunday, Dec. 31. Post Offices will be open regular operating hours on Tuesday, Dec. 26 and Jan. 2. Blue collection boxes are not serviced on Sundays and that will be the case on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve this year. Regular collections will be made on Dec. 23 and Dec. 30. The Christmas Day and New Year’s Day federal holidays will be observed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 respectively. Post Offices will be closed on those days and only Priority Mail Express packages will be delivered. All Post Offices will be open and regular mail delivery will resume after the holidays on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2. The Tennessee District serves ZIP Codes 370-374, 376-385 in Tennessee and 307 in northern Georgia. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. |
