SAN ANTONIO — In an effort to help Lackland Air Force Base Trainees with their holiday season mailings, San Antonio’s Lackland Branch Post Office will be holding a special holiday mail Christmas Exodus.

Lackland AFB will be sending approximately 1,500 trainees through the Lackland Post Office starting on Monday, Nov. 29, through Wednesday, Dec. 1. On Saturday, Dec. 4, approximately 1,100 trainees are expected, and the following week, Monday, Dec. 6, through Wednesday, Dec. 8, approximately 2,500 trainees are expected.

The base will post a notice informing the base population, aside from the trainees, that they should visit the nearby Valley Hi Station Post Office, versus the Lackland Post Office, due to the crowds expected during the Christmas Exodus.

Flat-rate Priority Mail boxes are available on base, and these will be provided to trainees so they can prepare and seal their packages prior to arriving at the Lackland Post Office.

The Lackland Post Office expects to handle mailing needs for between 500 to 800 trainees per week day during the Christmas Exodus period, with about 1,100 trainees projected to come through the Post Office on Saturday, Dec. 4.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
