AUSTIN, TX — Postmaster Fina Morales recently announced plans to keep the East Austin Station Post Office at the current 1914 E. 6th St. location. Under terms of a new lease with MPVI LLC, of Austin, the East Austin Station will include retail and Post Office Box operations, and will occupy about one-fourth of the current facility. Other commercial businesses will be located on either side of the redesigned postal operation.
Construction work on the redesigned East Austin Station will begin in mid-September and beginning Monday, Sept. 16, Post Office Box operations for East Austin Station customers, with ZIP Code 78762, will be moved to a temporary post office trailer located in the East Austin Station parking lot. For the duration of construction for the redesigned East Station Post Office, PO Box customers will be able to access their boxes between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., seven days a week, including holidays.
East Station customers are advised, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Postal Service will not be able to provide full retail services from the temporary postal unit until mid-October. However, there will be a postal employee on duty at the temporary office Monday to Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to provide PO Box customers with their accountable mail items requiring a signature or other items too large to fit in their PO Box. Some PO Box customers will also need to obtain new mailbox keys. New keys may be obtained from postal staff, on-site in the temporary postal unit, weekdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. East Austin PO Box customers will keep their same box number and ZIP Code, so there is no need to submit a change of address form.
Until we are able to provide full retail services from our temporary East Austin location, we recommend our customers visit Austin’s full service postal stations at the following locations: Downtown Station, 823 Congress Ave., Suite 150; Capitol Station, 111 E 17th St.; North Austin Station, 4300 Speedway; Central Park Station, 3507 N Lamar Blvd.; and Southeast Austin Station, 4516 Burleson Rd.
“We regret any inconvenience this may cause our customers,” said Postmaster Fina Morales. “But we are sure our customers will appreciate the office remaining in this location and will like the new East Austin Station once renovation has been completed.”
The East Austin Station Post Office first opened for business on Oct. 1, 1963, and has served East Austin area business and residential postal customers from this location for almost half a century. Last year, mail delivery operations for postal customers in ZIP Codes 78702, 78721 and 78722 located at the East Austin Station were moved to larger, nearby postal facilities in Northeast and Southeast Austin.
Postal customers are reminded the Post Office is always open at www.usps.com.
