PRESIDIO, TX — At the request of city officials, the U.S. Postal Service Rio Grande District recently conducted a study of operations at the Presidio Post Office and will be making several changes designed to improve customer service and satisfaction.  This includes a new process for reducing the amount of mail returned to sender and the expansion of customer access to the PO Box lobby to 24 hours a day, which were two key concerns expressed by city officials.

To help facilitate the creation of a data base that matches customer’s PO Boxes to their street addresses, the Postal Service will be using the existing 911 street address data base provided by the Rio Grande Council of Governments to ensure accuracy. This database will allow local Post Office staff to quickly match incoming mail with street addresses with the correct PO Box to ensure this mail goes to the correct customer’s box.  In some cases, the Postal Service may be mailing requests to customers to confirm their street address and PO Box information. It is important these customers fully complete and return the questionnaire to staff at the Post Office counter.

Customers who are unsure of their correct 911 street address may contact Catherine Crumpton, 911 GIS Coordinator for the Rio Grande Council of Governments (RGCOG), at 432-837-7199, or via email: 911rural@att.net, or they may consult the City of Presidio, at 432-229-3517, or the El Paso office of the RGCOG, at 915-533-0998, ext. 119.

The Presidio Post Office’s customer PO Box lobby, which has been open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.., Monday through Saturday, will now be open 24 hours daily beginning Friday evening, Jan. 31.  Past issues with vandalism and Post Office security prompted the reduced hours several years ago, but with assurances from city officials that police will be carefully monitoring the office after hours, the Postal Service will expand lobby hours on a trial basis and keep it opened 24 hours as long as there are no issues affecting the security, public safety or the integrity of the Post Office facility.

Postal officials are also conducting several other local Post Office studies and expect to share the results of these studies with city officials in the future.
