Harvey Milk Forever stamp

Dallas – Postal officials and representatives from the Dallas-based Resource Center and the Turtle Creek Chorale will join and unveil a Harvey Milk Forever Stamp at 5 p.m., this Saturday at Dallas Performance Hall. It is located at 2520 Flora Street, in Dallas. This special dedication of Harvey Milk will pay tribute to his legacy, and recognize his achievements. The public is invited.

Echoing the words recently made by USPS Deputy Postmaster General Ronald Stroman, Dallas Postmaster Bobby Collins said, “Let this stamp remind us of the fundamental truth behind Mr. Milk’s message – that we all have a stake in equality. Let this stamp inspire a new generation to continue Harvey Milk’s legacy – to keep working toward a world where prejudice gives way to acceptance, where division gives way to unity, and where fear gives way to hope.”

Joining Collins in dedicating the stamp will be Rafael McDonnell, the Communications and Advocacy Manager, from Resource Center. This facility is the primary lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and HIV/AIDS service organization in North Texas. The Center offers many LGBT services to the community and operates one of the largest LGBT Community Centers in the United States. The Community Center is home to a variety of community organizations and serves over 50,000 people each year through its programs and services.

Harvey Milk was a visionary leader who became one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. Milk’s achievements gave hope and confidence to the Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in the United States and elsewhere at a time when the community was encountering widespread hostility and discrimination. Milk believed that government should represent all citizens, ensuring equality and providing needed services.  His career ended when he a then-San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated on November 27, 1978. In 2009, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded the Medal of Freedom to Harvey Milk.
