AUSTIN, TX — Corey Richards, who was recently appointed as Austin’s 37th Postmaster, will be officially sworn-in during an oath of office ceremony to be held at 10 a.m., at the Texas State Capitol Legislative Conference Center, on Friday, March 30. The event is free and open to the public.
As Austin's Postmaster, Richards is responsible for the overall administrative and operational activity for approximately 2,152 employees, working at a total of 21 stations and branches. With an annual operating budget of more than $110 million, the Austin postal team provides service for 679 combined city and rural routes. In postal fiscal year 2017 (Oct. 1, 2016 to Sept. 30, 2017), Austin postal employees delivered over 335 million pieces of mail and generated revenue in excess of $404 million.
"As more and more people seek to call Austin home, it’s critical that the Postal Service carefully manage its operations to keep up with rapid growth in the number of delivery points we serve, while continuing to provide great service to our customers,” said Richards. "“I will do everything within my power to continuously make improvements, in order to provide the highest level of service to customers of the Austin Post Office.”.
Richards started his postal career in 1998, as a Distribution Clerk in Pendleton, OR. Later, he held several positions of increasing responsibility as a Supervisor, Customer Services in Pendleton and in Las Vegas, NV. He later served as Manager, Customer Services at several Las Vegas stations.
In 2009, Richards was selected as Postmaster of North Las Vegas, NV. He later served as a Senior Operations Manager for the Seattle (WA) District. In 2016, he was named Postmaster of Tacoma, WA, the position he held prior to coming to Austin.
Richards earned his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Western Oregon University.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
