Additional ounce price to change to 20 cents beginning April 17

April 12, 2011

SALT LAKE CITY — Fifteen Utah Post Offices will provide late-night collections of mail on Monday, April 18, to assist last-minute tax filers. In addition, the Salt Lake Main Post Office will extend window service hours until midnight, and 30 locations have Automated Postal Centers, which are available 24/7 (see the listing below of Post Offices and services provided).

Those wanting to avoid the crowds are encouraged to mail their tax returns early in the day. Correct postage is a must. Postal customers are reminded that some postage rates will change on April 17, including the additional ounce price for First-Class Mail, which will change from 17 cents to 20 cents. The price of a one-ounce First-Class Stamp will remain unchanged at 44 cents.

Postage for larger envelopes will continue to be 88 cents for the first ounce with the price of each additional ounce changing from 17 cents to 20 cents beginning April 17. Customers wanting certification that their tax forms are received by the IRS, should mail them using Certified Mail Service.

Postal customers are encouraged to check the collection times posted on each box to ensure pick up on April 18. Those who mail late in the day April 18 should take their tax returns to collection boxes located directly outside Post Offices with extended hours. While the Salt Lake Main Post Offices is extending retail hours, stamps can always be purchased through Automated Postal Centers, which accept debit and credit cards, and alternate locations, such as grocery stores and ATMs.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With 32,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $67 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 29th in the 2010 Fortune 500. Black Enterprise and Hispanic Business magazines ranked the Postal Service as a leader in workforce diversity. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency six consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
