SALT LAKE CITY — Even Santa would likely be impressed. Utah Postal carriers are expecting to deliver 250,000 packages on Monday, Dec. 21 – the busiest delivery day of the year. The Postal Service anticipates more than 30 million packages will be delivered nationwide on the peak delivery day alone.

All total, Utah Postal Carriers will deliver 2.7 million cards, letters and packages on Dec. 21.

Nearly 600 million packages are forecast to be delivered nationwide between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve – a record 5.4 million in Utah.

Every available carrier and vehicle, including rentals, will be called into service to ensure all those cards and packages are delivered on-time this holiday season. For weeks now, Utah postal carriers have been delivering packages 7-days a week in all larger cities, and delivering earlier in the morning to keep the USPS Network fluid.

“We plan months ahead for the holidays,” said USPS District Manager Darrell Stoke. “Customers can count on the Postal Service to do whatever it takes to deliver their packages on-time this holiday season.”

In time for the holidays, the Postal Service offers real-time delivery notifications – meaning customers who sign up for alerts at myusps.com will receive text and/or email notification within a few minutes of the delivery scan for select packages.

For those who have yet to get those cards and presents in the mail, it’s not too late, says Stoke, who shares the following mail-by dates and convenient options for mailing and shipping.

The popular Priority Mail Flat Rate Holiday Boxes virtually eliminate the need to weigh packages.

  • Self Service Kiosks – Located in 31 Post Office lobbies in the state, these easy to use machines allow customers to purchase stamps, and weigh and ship packages 24/7 using their debit or credit cards. The kiosks can be found in most Salt Lake metro area Post Offices, two Ogden Post Offices – Ben Lomond and Mount Ogden; and all Post Offices in American Fork, Cedar City, Layton, Lehi, Logan, Orem, Pleasant Grove, Provo, Roy, and St. George.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
