Local Post Offices Maintaining Normal Hours on April 15,

2008 Federal Tax Filing Deadline

April 07, 2009

Release No.  09-015a

RICHMOND DISTRICT VA — The deadline for mailing 2008 federal tax returns is Wednesday, April 15, 2009. No Post Office in the Richmond District, which includes the Hampton Roads, central Virginia, Fredericksburg and Charlottesville areas, is providing extended retail hours other than the Richmond Main Post Office. The Richmond Main Post Office, 1801 Brook Road, will offer retail window service until 7 p.m. Both the Richmond Main Post Office and the Hampton Roads General Mail Facility, 600 Church Street, Norfolk, will have personnel collecting mail until midnight to ensure last minute filers receive an April 15 postmark on their federal returns.

All returns with Automated Postal Center (APC), or self-service kiosk, postage must be deposited prior to the last posted collection time, or the mail must be taken to either the Richmond Main Post Office or Hampton Roads General Mail Facility by midnight to receive a timely postmark. These kiosks are available 24/7. The APC label reflects the sale date which does not necessarily represent the mailing date, and an official postmark is required on returns.

Mailers are strongly advised to check the last pickup time posted on blue collection boxes before depositing their returns as mail deposited after the last pickup time will not receive an April 15 postmark. Mailers needing “proof of mailing” must use either a certificate of mailing, certified mail or registered mail obtained through a retail window employee.

Customers are encouraged to mail their tax returns as early in the day as possible and weigh their returns or extension requests on a postal scale to calculate the proper amount of postage needed. This is especially true if a customer is filing extra forms or schedules. Tax agencies will NOT pay postage due and the return or extension request will be considered delinquent, even if the mail piece has an April 15 postmark.
