VIRGINIA BEACH—For more than half a century, Americans have turned to television for entertainment and information. Whether laughing at the first situation comedies, identifying with ordinary people who had their day in the spotlight on game shows, or tingling at crime dramas, audiences were charmed by the novelty of the young medium.

On Tuesday, August 11, the U.S. Postal Service commemorates 20 great shows from TV’s golden age with the issuance of the “Early TV Memories” stamp sheet. The Virginia Beach Post Office is hosting a local dedication of the stamps in Pembroke Mall’s center court from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. that includes TV show look-alikes. Individuals interested in attending the event as a look-alike from one of the shows is welcomed.

In addition to the local dedication, a Postal Inspector will provide crime prevention information, a safety specialist will have coloring pages that encourage child safety around postal delivery vehicles, and there will be a display on the history of local TV stations. Also, period vehicles from the 1940s, 50s and 60s owned by members of the Tidewater Region of the Antique Automobile Club will have on display next to the postal mobile van in the Kohl’s parking near the Shell Gas Station.

The shows commemorated in the “Early TV Memories” 20 stamp sheet include: Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet; Alfred Hitchcock Presents; Dinah Shore Show; Dragnet; Ed Sullivan Show; Georges Burns & Gracie Allen Show; Hopalong Cassidy; The Honeymooners; Howdy Doody; I Love Lucy; Kulka, Fran and Ollie; Lassie; The Lone Ranger; Perry Mason; Phil Silvers Show; The Red Skelton Show; Texaco Star Theater, Tonight Show; Twilight Zone; and You Bet Your Life.
