Federal Tax Filing Deadline Draws Near

Richmond Main Post Office only office to have extended hours on April 15th

April 09, 2010

RICHMOND, VA —The deadline for mailing 2009 federal tax returns and extension requests is midnight on Thursday, April 15, 2010.  The Richmond Main Post Office, 1801 Brook Road, Richmond, VA 23232 will be the only Richmond District* office open past 5 pm.  The Brook Road office will have Retail window service inside until 8 pm and personnel will be collecting mail outside until midnight to ensure last minute filers receive the all-important April 15, 2010 postmark on their federal returns.

Mailers are strongly advised to check the last pickup time posted on blue collection boxes and lobby drop slots before depositing their returns.  Mail deposited after the last collection time (generally between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm) will NOT receive the April 15th postmark

Also, mailers using an Automated Postal Center (APC), or self-service kiosk, should be aware that an APC does not provide “proof of mailing” as the date of the sale on the receipt does not necessarily represent the mailing date.  These kiosks are available 24/7, but an April 15 postmark will be provided ONLY if the mail is deposited by 5 pm.  To ensure the postmark after 5 pm, APC users should bring their mail to the Richmond Main Office for cancellation.

Offices with APC’s are:  Midlothian 1201 Sycamore Sq, Midlothian, VA 23113
Genito 3530 Post Office Rd, Midlothian, VA 23112

Customers are encouraged to mail their tax returns as early in the day as possible and weigh their returns or extension requests on a postal scale to calculate the proper amount of postage needed.  This is especially true if a customer is filing extra forms or schedules (an envelope with up to four sheets of paper will normally mail for 44 cents).  Tax agencies will NOT pay postage due and the return or extension request will be returned to sender and considered delinquent, even if the mail piece has an April 15th postmark.

  • Richmond District includes all of Virginia except Northern and Southwestern Virginia.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 26th in the 2008 Fortune 500.
