RICHMOND — South River Compounding Pharmacy, which houses the US Postal Service’s 22nd Contract Postal Unit (CPU) in the Richmond District, is located in a bustling area of Richmond’s West End where businesses and residences abound. A compounding pharmacy is one where pharmacists and physicians work closely together to tailor prescriptions to an individual patient’s requirements – no ‘one size fits all’ medications here.
South River Compounding Pharmacy is located on the corner of Gaskins Road and Mayland Drive at 3656 Mayland Court in Richmond’s 23233 ZIP code area. The pharmacy offers a wide range of specialized services including customized hormone replacement therapies for men and women; adrenal and thyroid therapies; medicine compounding for veterinary, dental, dermatologic, pediatric, podiatric and respiratory care; help for autism patients, sports medicine, wound care, scar therapy and palliative care. Services include health screenings and wellness and nutritional consultations, and much more.
“A CPU provides added convenience for the pharmacy’s customers and area residents and businesses,” said USPS Retail Manager Kris Lydon. “It benefits customers in two ways: the customers who use the pharmacy anyway can take care of most of their postal needs while picking up a prescription or other items they need. And customers who need postal services will bring additional foot traffic to the pharmacy.” CPUs provide all the services of a Post Office retail window except passports, PO Boxes and postal money orders. (For international mail to be accepted at a CPU, an online customs form must be completed in advance by the customer.)
Customers who attended the grand opening on June 7th were treated to refreshments and gift bags from the pharmacy. “This will be really handy for me,” one customer said. “I live nearby and my gym is near, too. It’ll be especially helpful at Christmas time when the Post Offices are so busy.” Because CPUs are able to handle most customer transactions, including weighing parcels, and calculating and selling postage, they help ease the pressure of customer traffic at very busy retail windows in the area. “The pharmacy is open 9 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday,” added Lydon, “so these extended hours offer additional convenience for postal customers.”
South River also has a Southside location in the Bellgrade Shopping Center at 11420 West Huguenot Road, Midlothian, VA 23113. They can be reached by phone at (804)897-6447 or toll-free at (888)879-7713.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
