Essex Junction postmark

Portland, ME – The Essex Junction, VT, Post Office is offering a special pictorial postmark to help celebrate the centennial of The Long Trail. The Long Trail runs the length of Vermont, and is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States. Construction began in 1910 and it was completed by 1930 under the auspices of the Green Mountain Club.

At the Essex Junction Post Office on Saturday, October 23, Postmaster Rick Burleson and his staff will, at customer request, stamp letters and postcards with a unique postmark (pictured) documenting the occasion. Specially authorized by the U.S. Postal Service, this special postmark is a wonderful way to take home an inexpensive souvenir of the event.

Customers can request the special postmark free-of-charge by mail for 30 days after the event by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope containing the letter or envelope they wish to be cancelled to: Postmaster, 22 Essex Way, Essex Junction, VT, 05452-9998.

“We will be happy to cancel and mail back any letters that our customers mail in,” said Postmaster Burleson. “Customers may also bring in their own envelopes to obtain a postmark that they can take home as a keepsake.”

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no direct support from taxpayers. With 36,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the 2009 Fortune 500.
