Postal Service To Participate In Military Family Day at Zoo

Will Give Away 1,000 Free Military Shipping Kits

June 29, 2011

MILWAUKEE, WI — The Postal Service is making it easy for people throughout the greater Milwaukee area to ship packages to troops around the world.

More than 15,000 military members and their families are expected to attend this year’s Milwaukee County Zoo Military Family Day on Sunday, July 3rd. Welcoming them will be representatives from the Postal Service, who will bring a semi-trailer full of mili-kits to give away to those interested in supporting service men and women by sending care packages and a “little bit of home”.

This is the third straight year that the Postal Service is offering free mili-kits at the Military Family Day. In previous years, the Postal Service has distributed more than 3,000 free military kits at this annual event.

“This is a great event for people who have family and friends serving in the military,” said Milwaukee Postmaster Kim Quayle. “If past years are any indication, we’ll most likely run out of kits before the day is done.”

The kits feature six Flat Rate Priority boxes – medium and large sizes – designed to be shipped to APO/FPO military addresses at a special $2 discount off the regular postage price. Also included in the kits is tape, custom forms and address labels.

“This event not only benefits those who’ll enjoy the activities at the zoo that day,” says Milwaukee Retail Manager Susan Thiel, “but it also presents an opportunity to bring a smile to a soldier overseas by shipping a care package later.”

The Postal Service will be at the Milwaukee County Zoo on Military Family Day from 9am – 5pm, handing out free mili-kits, answering questions, and providing “how to” tips for shipping packages to those serving in the armed forces.
