MONROE, WI — The Monroe Post Office is warning residents to be aware of counterfeit check schemes against the elderly. In recent weeks, several incidents have been reported at the Monroe Post Office.

“Many of our customers have called us concerned,” said Monroe Postmaster Doug Crooks.  “Apparently they are being asked to mail money orders or checks to distant locations in order to receive money at their local Post Office.”

There are a variety of scams that target the elderly, according to Crooks. These include sweepstakes scams, foreign lotteries, telemarketing scams and charity scams. There are also many variations of the counterfeit check scam.

“There is no legitimate reason why someone would send you a check or money and ask you to wire-transfer them money in return,” said Crooks. “Customers should never wire-transfer money to someone you don’t know. Once the money is gone, it’s usually impossible to recover.”

While there are many scams currently in operation, following some general tips will help postal customers avoid becoming victims.

General Scam Tips:

• You should never have to pay to receive a prize or enter a sweepstakes.
• All foreign lotteries through the mail are illegal.
• Donate only to charities you’re familiar with and are sure they are legitimate.
• Don’t give out financial information, Social Security, credit card, or bank account numbers.
• Don’t send money to a foreign lottery or to an unfamiliar charity.

Customers should not be pressured into making immediate decisions if they think they are being scammed, added Crooks. “Get all the information in writing before agreeing to make a purchase, enter a contest, or give a donation,” he said.

Customers can report fraud online at www.postalinspectors.uspis.gov or call 877-876-2455 (option 4). They can also stop by the local Post Office if they have questions or concerns.
