MADISON, WI – As a result of a study begun in February 2013, the Postal Service has made the decision to move originating mail processing operations from the Madison Processing and Distribution Center to the Processing and Distribution Center in Milwaukee. Once the transfer of originating operations is completed, the Madison facility will remain open and continue other mail processing operations. Local mail delivery will not be affected by the move.
District Manager Steve Wenzel said, “Because of the drastic decline in mail volume, the Postal Service is in a fiscal crisis and must take action to reduce the size of its mail processing network. Consolidating operations such as this is necessary if the Postal Service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation.”
As a result of this action, staffing adjustments will be necessary. Any actions taken will be in compliance with applicable law, collective bargaining agreements, and Postal Service regulations and policies.
Full retail services will still be available and customers will continue to receive high quality service, added Wenzel.
Retail service for purchasing stamps and other postal products will continue to be available at the Madison Post Office. Large volume business mailers will still be able to bring their mail to the Madison Business Mail Entry Unit.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
