Representatives will explain how consumers can avoid dangerous swindles and schemes during a press conference at the Milwaukee Post Office in the lobby at 10:30 a.m. They will also discuss the upcoming Shred Day event hosted by the agencies and conducted by PROSHRED. The Postal Service, Postal Inspection Service and Federal Trade Commission play leading roles in increasing public awareness about identity theft, which is the top consumer complaint nationally, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Crime statistics show that in 2012, more close to 10 million Americans were victims of identity theft, costing them roughly $5 billion. In the same year, there were 4,055 reported cases of identity theft in Wisconsin, according to the FTC. Shredding personal information is an important first step in identity theft protection, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, United States Postal Service and Federal Trade Commission are reminding consumers and businesses to properly dispose of unneeded documents responsibly, free of charge, at the Shred Day event on March 4. |

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, usps.com, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.
