Deceased property lessors

The Postal Service leases more than 23,000 properties. Of those tens of thousands, 338 properties had deceased lessors. The Postal Service cannot stop making rental payments simply because the lessor has died as each property represents a contractual obligation and the payments made are for the right to use and occupy the space.

When the Postal Service is notified of the death of a lessor, it sends out a change of ownership package to the appropriate party or parties.

Finally, the OIG found no loss of funds during this audit.
