Targeted disabilities are those disabilities designated as a “targeted disability or serious health condition” on the Office of Personnel Management’s Standard Form 256, Self-Identification of Disability. As of October 2018, those disabilities are the following:
- Developmental disability (e.g., autism spectrum disorder).
- Traumatic brain injury.
- Deafness or serious difficulty hearing benefiting from, for example, American Sign Language, Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART), hearing aids, a cochlear implant, and other supports.
- Blindness or serious difficulty seeing even when wearing glasses.
- Missing extremities (including arm, leg, hand, and/or foot).
- Significant mobility impairment benefiting from the use of a wheelchair, scooter, walker, leg brace(s), and other supports.
- Partial or complete paralysis.
- Epilepsy or other seizure disorders.
- Intellectual disability.
- Significant psychiatric disorder (e.g., bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or major depression).
- Dwarfism.
- Significant disfigurement (e.g., disfigurements caused by burns, wounds, accidents, or congenital disorders).
