Cantilever Mailbox Support

Exhibit E shows two (2) diagrams of proper mounting supports for a Cantilever Mailbox Support as suggested by the Federal Highway Administration. The mounting in the diagram on the left side of the page shows how to setup a cantilever mounting made of 1-3/4 inch steel pipe. The pipe is embedded 24 inches in the ground in 36 inches of concrete. The cantilever arm extends approximately 48 inches out from the mounting post to the near the edge of the roadway. From the edge of the road surface to the bottom of the mail receptacle is approximately 42 inches (also the approximate length of the mounting post from surface to the cantilever arm). A second smaller diagram on the bottom of the left side of the page shows how to mount a traditional curbside mail receptacle on a piece of wood and attach it to the 1-3/4 inch steel pipe.

The second mounting diagram on the right side of the page shows how to setup a cantilever mounting support made of 4 inch by 4 inch by 2-3/4 inch wood. The wood is embedded 36 inches into the ground in 36 inches of crushed stone. The cantilever arm extends approximately 48 inches out from the mounting post to the near the edge of the roadway. The arm also has an additional 18 inches running to the rear of the mounting post acting as something of a balance. From the edge of the road surface to the bottom of the mail receptacle is approximately 42 inches (also the approximate length of the mounting post from the ground surface to the cantilever arm). The box is mounted on the top of the cantilever arm up to the roadside edge of the arm.
