SUBJECT: Neuter or Spay Stamps
The United States Postal Service continues its longstanding tradition of raising
awareness of important social issues with the issuance of the Neuter or Spay
stamps on September 20th in Denver, Colorado. The Neuter or Spay stamps serve
as a wake up call to all Americans about the serious problem of pet overpopulation
. . . and a part of its solution that all responsible pet owners possess-spaying
or neutering pet cats and dogs.
Every year, 8 to 10 million cats and dogs are given up to animal shelters and
others are abandoned on the streets. And every year, 4 to 5 million cats and
dogs are euthanized in shelters because no s could be found for them. Many
cats and dogs that die as a result of pet overpopulation- whether humanely in
a shelter or by injury, disease, or neglect - are animals that probably would
have made wonderful companions if given the chance. With a workforce of over
750,000, we have a wonderful opportunity to create awareness among our family
members, friends, and customers about the health, behavioral, and social benefits
of spaying and neutering our pets.
The Postal Service is proud to join with the American Partnership for Pets,
the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), and other
animal health and welfare organizations to promote the issuance of the Neuter
or Spay stamps.
Our issuances of social awareness stamps have helped stimulate conversation
in communities across the nation about serious topics such as AIDS awareness,
breast cancer research, organ and tissue donation, and mentoring. These activities
strengthen the Postal Service's historic role as a community leader and responsible
corporate citizen.
As we make plans to promote the Neuter or Spay stamps and spread the word about
the importance of spaying or neutering pet cats and dogs, I want to thank you
for your support. Our efforts can make a tremendous difference in stamping out
pet overpopulation.
