SUBJECT: Purple Heart Stamp
The United States Postal Service will issue the Purple Heart definitive postage
stamp on May 30, 2003. The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President
of the United States to members of the U.S. military who have been wounded or
killed in action. It will be a nationwide issuance.
I am pleased to inform you that the Postal Service is working with the Military
Order of the Purple Heart, to promote this stamp. According to this organization,
the medal is "the oldest military decoration in the world in present use
and the first award made available to the common soldier."
Many community events have already taken place surrounding the announcement
of the Purple Heart stamp. Throughout the coming year, 11m sure you will find
many opportunities to hold your own local event.
As we make plans to promote the Purple Heart stamp, I want to take this opportunity
to thank you for your support. Inside this field publicity kit, you will find
suggestions and ideas to help you implement events in your community surrounding
the Purple Heart stamp. Be sure to utilize the expertise of your Public Affairs

Promoting the Postal Service's stamp program provides us with a unique way
to gain community support for Postal Service public policy programs and helps
strengthen our ties with the communities we serve.
