Postmaster General (PMG) Jack Potter has named five individuals to key officer positions in Human Resources (HR) and Operations. The appointments coincide with a realignment of HR and Labor Relations functions.

"As we work toward the creation of the Strategic Transformation Plan 2006-2010," Potter said, "it is critical that we have the leadership and processes in place that will assist us in our goals of increasing operational efficiency, improving service and continuing to enhance a customer- focused, performance-based culture."

The PMG named Tony Vegliante, currently vice president, Labor Relations, to serve as chief Human Resources officer and executive vice president. He will be a member of the executive committee and report to the postmaster general.

Doug Tulino, manager, Labor Relations Policy and Programs, has been named acting vice president, Labor Relations, reporting to the chief Human Resources officer.

Susan LaChance will serve as the new Human Resources vice president for Employee Development and Diversity. In her new role, she will be responsible for employee and leadership development, succession planning, equal employment opportunity and diversity.

Rounding out the new Human Resources team is DeWitt Harris, vice president of Employee Resource Management. Harris has been instrumental in driving workplace improvements as measured by key indicators such as reductions in Occupational Safety and Health Administration illness and injury rates and the positive results of the Voice of the Employee survey. "We look forward to DeWitt's continued leadership in this role as he places an increased focus on the development and rollout of the Human Resources Shared Services initiative, PostalPEOPLE," Potter said.

William Galligan, the new senior vice president of Operations, will have responsibility for Engineering, Facilities and Network Operations Management, as well as Delivery and Retail. He will report to Deputy Postmaster General and Chief Operating Officer Pat Donahoe.

Megan Brennan will serve as Northeast Area vice president. Brennan has responsibility for all retail, mail processing, delivery and administrative operations for 3,000 Postal ServiceTM facilities serving 20 million customers in a seven- state area. Brennan also reports to Donahoe.

"Each of these individuals, through a combination of experience, education and outstanding performance, have demonstrated their unique qualifications for these key leadership positions as we continue to move the Postal ServiceTM forward," Potter said.

Courting customer comment: USPS seeks input for Strategic Transformation Plan 2006-2010

The Postal Service is seeking input from customers as it moves into the second phase of transformation. Strategic Transformation Plan 2006-2010 will be the blueprint that outlines the Postal Service's goals, targets and strategies through 2010.

The new plan will combine key elements from our Five- Year Strategic Plan, the Annual Performance Plan, the original Transformation Plan and the Transformation Progress Report. "We're transforming the Postal Service for one simple reason: to continue to provide customers with products, services and performance they need at affordable prices," said PMG Jack Potter.

The Postal Service goes gold: Band's album reaches 500,000 mark

From left, USPS Licensing Specialist Krista Becker and Licensing Manager Maria Pell share the Gold Record moment with musicians Jimmy Tamborello and Ben Gibbard of The Postal Service and Sub Pop record label founder Jonathan Poneman.

The unlikely duo of musicians Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello was busy with their own bands when they started a side project together. After weeks of mailing music tracks back and forth to each other, they completed their CD "Give Up."

Stuck for a name for their collaboration, the two decided to pay homage to the delivery service that was there when they needed it - they called themselves "The Postal Service." The rest is musical history.

Their album had sold more than 566,548 copies by the time the duo received their Gold Record from the Recording Industry Association of America last week. It's the second biggest seller in indie label Sub Pop's history, behind Nirvana's "Bleach." And it helps keep our brand - The Postal Service - in the mind of a new generation of customers.

As thanks, the Army is mailing Freedom Team Salute packages to 240,000 veterans and supporters. It's the first wave of a First-Class® mailing that runs until Sept. 30.
