In the rush to get millions of letters and parcels to the right place each day, USPS employees can inadvertently load containers of mail on the wrong trailer. That happened at least 3,518 times between May 2006 and the end of January.
But each mis-loaded container arrived at the right place. How? Employees with surface visibility scanners found the errors and reloaded the misplaced containers on the right trailer.
It takes only two scans — a “Placard Assign” scan and a “Trailer Load” scan on each container — to make sure mail is on the correct trailer.
