Once battered but never bowed, the Katrina-devastated Biloxi, MS, Main Post Office resumed service at its original headquarters recently. The reopening of the 49-year-old building was a testament to the perseverance of residents and postal employees in an area hard hit by the 2005 storm.
The official reopening was the highlight of a ceremony marking the facility’s return to service. Renovations to the facility include a new elevator and conversion of a two-story courtroom in the building into 20,000 square feet of office space, with views of the city and the Gulf of Mexico.
Even though the building was extensively damaged, the Post Office, operating out of three trailers, was back in business three days after the hurricane reached the Mississippi coastline. Now, it’s back where it belongs.
