A dogged determination to be safe

The Voluntary Protections Program team in Covington, KY — just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati — wanted to educate the public about the problem of dog bites.

So the team organized a community-wide Dog Bite Awareness Day, with the support of local groups and businesses. Volunteers from Duke Energy, which has its own dog bite problems, served hot dogs and drinks to schoolchildren, animal control officers and members of the city’s fire and police departments. A local hospital provided tips for avoiding dog attacks and responsible ownership.

Three area schools participated in a safety poster art design contest, and students were awarded prizes donated by local businesses. Covington Mayor Butch Callery presented a proclamation in support of dog bite awareness.

The event was a big hit. The team has already started making plans for next year.
