July 2008 — Mandatory Stand-Up Talk

Managers and supervisors: This stand-up talk must be given to all employees who operate a vehicle in the performance of duty.

You also are required to comply with the guidelines in the stand-up talk if you operate a motor vehicle in the performance of duty. And, each quarter you must verify that postal drivers under your supervision have current, valid licenses.

You must suspend or revoke the Postal Service™ driving privileges of any employee who can’t show you a current, valid state driver’s license and, if required by state law and job duty, a commercial driver’s license. The employee, including you, must not drive in the performance of duty until a valid state license can be produced. For bargaining unit employees, please see Article 29 of the appropriate collective bargaining agreement to determine whether rights or obligations exist concerning reassignment to non-driving duties.

If you drive for USPS, a state license is required

If you operate a motor vehicle as part of your duties whether the vehicle is postal-owned, leased, your own, or a contracted vehicle you must have a valid state driver’s license in your possession when driving the vehicle.

If you drive a larger vehicle that requires a commercial driver’s license, you must also have the commercial driver’s license in your possession in addition to a valid state driver’s license when driving to satisfy a job requirement.

As a Postal Service driver, you must comply with any restrictions on your state driver’s license.

You must produce a current, valid state driver’s license when requested by your supervisor or manager.

And finally, you must notify your supervisor or manager if your state driving license or commercial driver’s license is suspended or revoked.
