Management instruction (MI) EL-810-2010-1, Confined Space Safety Program, January 15, 2010, is now available on PolicyNet. Effective immediately, MI-EL-810-93-1, Confined Space Safety, September 1993, is obsolete.
The new MI contains updated organization and web references and updated policies. The most significant policy change relates to the process for reclassifying confined spaces, as follows:
n Spaces previously classified as non-permit-required due to the presence of electrical or mechanical hazards addressed by lockout procedures will need to be re-inventoried and identified as permit-required spaces.
n As a result, when Postal Service™ employees need to enter these spaces, the spaces must be reclassified temporarily as non-permit-required.
