Publication 52 Revision: Clarification of Lithium Batteries Packaging Instructions

Effective March 14, 2010, the Postal Service™ Publication 52, Hazardous, Restricted and Perishable Mail, is revised to provide the proper packaging standards for lithium batteries.

Proper packaging standards must be followed as outlined in Publication 52 Appendix A, Hazardous Materials Table, for lithium batteries to be permitted in domestic air and surface transportation. Lithium batteries are also subject to the “9D” (Lithium and Lithium-ion Cells and Batteries) packaging instructions in Appendix C, USPS Packaging Instructions for Mailable Hazardous Materials, of Publication 52.
