Effective September 7, 2010, the Postal Service™ will revise Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, Domestic Mail Manual (DMM®) Exhibit 507.1.4 to add a new endorsement, “Returned to Sender, Item Contains Nonmailable Contents,” for mailpieces that are returned due to contents that are nonmailable.
This endorsement will be used to return mailpieces that were accepted in error, found in the mail, or misrepresented by the mailer when presented for mailing. This could occur during an official USPS® inspection of a mailpiece that is not sealed against postal inspection after acceptance or improperly packaged mailpieces that are damaged during processing, whereby it is obvious the mailpiece contains nonmailable contents such as cigarettes or alcoholic beverages.
