About Long Term Care

Long term care is ongoing assistance with some of the most basic activities of daily living such as eating, bathing, dressing, or getting in and out of bed or a chair. The need most often stems from disability, chronic illness, or cognitive impairment (such as Alzheimer’s disease) and is more common than you might think. In fact, 70 percent of people over age 65 require some long term care in their lifetime.1 But the need can also arise at any time and at any age due to an accident or unexpected illness.

Most health insurance programs, including the FEHB Program, Medicare, TRICARE, and TRICARE For Life, provide little or no coverage for long term care. And long term care services can be very expensive.

For eligible members of the federal family, FLTCIP is a solution designed to help meet these needs, securing your future by offering financial protection, important stay-at-home benefits, and professional support every step of the way.

About the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program

The FLTCIP was established by an act of Congress in 2000 and was designed to meet the specific needs of the federal family. The FLTCIP provides industry-leading benefits and offers flexible options that allow enrollees to tailor coverage to meet their needs.

The FLTCIP is administered by Long Term Care Partners and underwritten by John Hancock Life & Health Insurance Company under a contract with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

Certain medical conditions, or combinations of conditions, will prevent some people from being approved for coverage. You need to apply to find out if you are eligible for this coverage.
