Postal Service™ employees have many opportunities to reduce waste and repurpose items they no longer use.
At home, employees can:
n Donate clothes, shoes, and even eyeglasses.
n Take advantage of local free drop-off days for household hazardous wastes.
n Recycle old tires to build new roads or use them in other creative ways (see pinterest.com/taketentire/things-to-do-with-old-tires/).
n Contact local pharmacies for information on how to safely dispose of old pharmaceuticals.
At work, employees can:
n Establish a Lean Green team at their facility (see blue.usps.gov/sustainability/greenteams.htm).
n Check out the green project list for ideas from over 40 low-cost projects (see blue.usps.gov/sustainability/greenteams/projects/).
n Use the Green Initiative Tracking Tool (GITT) to monitor consumption of energy, fuel, and water as well as recycling, trash, and consumable spending habits.
Employees can also take the Green team orientation course, which is a 30-minute online simulation for new Green team leaders and members. Log on to the Learning Management System on Blue and search for course #10017645.
Postal Service employees can use GITT to track the completion of green projects in their facilities as well to provide key sustainability metrics at the national, area, district, and facility levels. These metrics include:
n Facility energy and vehicle petroleum,
n Recycling and trash disposal, and
n Consumption of water and other resources.
