Effective September 9, 2021, the Postal Service™ is revising the Individual Country Listing for Austria in Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, International Mail Manual (IMM®) to note a revision to the prohibition relating to human remains.
This revision is based on a consultation with Österreichische Post AG (the designated postal operator of Austria) on June 16, 2021, and additional clarification received on August 24, 2021.

[Revise the entry “Human Remains” to read as follows:]
Human remains, including organs and tissues. However, cremated human remains are allowed provided that all of the following conditions are met:
n The remains are addressed to either a funeral director, mortician, or cemetery.
n The sender obtains official approval from the Austrian embassy or consulate in the United States.
n The sender coordinates with the recipient regarding any required documents.

Although effective September 9, 2021, the Postal Service will incorporate this revision into the next edition of the online IMM, which is available via Postal Explorer® at pe.usps.com.
