Information Security

Be Wary of Ransomware

The United States Postal Service® warns employees and contractors to be aware of cybercriminals who use a malicious tactic known as ransomware to hold entire computer networks hostage until a ransom payment is made. On average, four thousand ransomware attacks have occurred daily since 2016.

According to the FBI, ransomware can cause expensive disruptions to operations and the loss of critical information and data. It also generates billions of dollars annually for cybercriminals who collect the ransom through credit cards, Bitcoin, or other cryptocurrencies.

If you believe your computer or device has been affected by ransomware:

n Stop using the infected device.

n Email cybersafe@usps.gov or call the Cybersecurity Operations Center at 866-877-7247.

n Report the incident to your manager or supervisor.

Don’t use the infected device unless instructed to do so by the Postal Service’s Computer Incident Response Team or the IT Help Desk.
