Claims resulting from damage to lease trailers while in the custody of the Postal Service are processed and paid as contractual obligations rather than tort claims. The procedures outlined in this MI do not apply to any other tort claims that might arise.
The Postal Service will not process more than one claim for a single incident of damage. The Postal Service is not responsible for maintenance, damage caused by ordinary wear and tear, or damage caused by anyone other than an employee of the Postal Service or of a Postal Service supplier’s employee who is not employed by the Lease Trailer Services supplier.
Any vehicle damage claim outside of the scope of this MI should be handled in accordance with Handbook PO-701, Fleet Management.
