What are Negotiable Instruments?
Negotiable Instruments are any paper, document or device that can be used to transfer value (e.g. travelers checks) OR written and signed unconditional promises, OR orders to pay a specific sum or money on demand or at a definite time, payable to order or bearer. Specific Negotiable Instruments are defined as either Bearer or Non-bearer form.
Why do we need this policy on Negotiable Instruments?
· To communicate special procedures for the handling of negotiable instruments to ensure compliance.
· To ensure insurance coverage in the event of lost shipments.
Non-Bearer Form
Non-Bearer (Negotiable Instrument) - when a paper, document or device is not transferable; made payable to a specific person or entity requires a signature endorsement/validation before payment is transferred.
Examples: Acceptable if in non-bearer form: bankers drafts, bills of exchange, bills of lading, bonds, two party checks; delivery order, no nominative shares, stock certificates, money orders (made out to 2nd party) drawn from a financial institution such as banks, and post offices if a stop payment can be made. (Not from convenience or grocery stores.)
