Hurricane activity during the last two years has been moderate. But 2008 could be different. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting the possibility of more severe hurricanes this year.
That prediction comes on the heels of some of the worst tornadoes, high winds and winter flooding to hit the U.S. in recent years.
“We’ve already seen an unprecedented start this year, with severe weather affecting cities throughout the country,” USPS Executive Director, National Preparedness, John Bridges said. “As summer approaches, we must be mindful of the possibilities for dangerous hurricanes, extreme winds, flooding, wildfires and downed power lines.”
Bridges said the implications of violent weather calls for “launching a culture of preparedness, 24 x 7 x 365.” Some simple steps to get ready include preparing an emergency supply kit, developing a communication plan and knowing where to go for local instructions.
Now is a good time to review with family and co-workers the possibility of potential disasters and why it’s necessary to prepare for them. Go to: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/intro.shtml for more information on how to prepare for violent weather.
