The Green Office Initiative: An Invitation to Put Your Stamp on a Greener Tomorrow

Earthday Tree

What is the Green Office Initiative?

Informal teams directed by facility managers promote Postal Service efforts to reduce waste. These teams save money and build a “conservation culture” by:

n Reducing facility energy and vehicle petroleum use,

n Conserving water,

n Reducing solid waste to landfills,

n Increasing recycling, and

n Using fewer consumable materials.

Green Team members in a facility typically represent Plant and Delivery Operations, Maintenance, Supply Management, Finance, Human Resources, and other key groups. All Green Team members play an important role in bringing conservation practices into our daily lives.

Get Involved

If you would like to get involved, talk to your manager about setting up a Lean Green Team at your facility and follow these easy steps:

1. Go to the Lean Green Team home page for an introduction (blue.usps.gov/sustainability/greenteams.htm). For a simulation of how to set up a Green Team, log into the Learning Management System (LMS) and select Course #10017645.

2. Request access to the Green Initiative Tracking Tool (GITT) at blue.usps.gov/sustainability/gitt/welcome.htm. This software application gives you real-time access to local, district, area, and national sustainability metrics for:

n Energy and fuel use,

n Water use,

n Recycling revenue,

n Waste disposal expenses, and

n Consumable spending.

Online tutorials are available to explain how to access GITT and generate reports.

3. Use GITT to register your local Green Team and set up a profile for your facility.

4. Study the Green Project List (blue.usps.gov/sustainability/greenteams/projects/) for ideas, including more than 40 low- or no-cost projects you can implement at your facility. Track your progress online to monitor how you are doing.

5. Share the excitement of your facility’s contributions to a sustainable workplace. Recognize your team members and spread the word. Once you can demonstrate results, put your team in for a Postmaster General Sustainability Excellence Award (qblue.usps.gov/sustainability/pmgaward/2016/nominations/welcome.htm).
