Sustainability Module in the Facilities Database – The Results Are In!

The Facilities Database is used by the Postal Service™ to collect facility-specific data about each of our sites using separate modules with questions for different categories. These modules include questions on collection, passport services, PO Boxes, and special services, just to name a few. Every year, offices update the modules with new information, including the Sustainability/Recycling module, which was added in 2018.

With the addition of the Sustainability/Recycling module, the National Recycling Operation (NRO) can now see which offices are recycling and what type of material each office recycles. Material types include:

n Paper,

n Cardboard,

n Clear shrink or stretch wrap,

n Lamps and bulbs,

n Batteries, and

n Printer cartridges.

Completed in February 2020, here are the results of the most current certification period:

n 57% of retail and delivery offices participated in backhaul recycling*.

n 62% of offices recycled batteries.

n 57% of offices recycled used lamps and bulbs.

n 84% of offices recycled printer cartridges.

*Backhaul recycling is the process in which the office sends its recyclables (paper, cardboard, and clear shrink or stretch wrap) to a plant or Postal Service hub site for consolidation.
