USPS Stormwater Policy Reminder

The United States Postal Service® has established policies to reduce pollution from stormwater and snowmelt, which can cause oil and other hazardous chemicals or pollutants to enter the environment. These policies protect the environment and require employees to take specific actions to minimize pollution.

The Postal Service™ requires employees to:

n Prevent vehicle wash water or other equipment wastewater from entering stormwater drains. Postal Service sites must establish vehicle washing contracts through the Vehicles, Delivery, and Industrial Equipment Category Management Center using the nationally approved Statement of Work for vehicle washing. National contracts require suppliers who wash vehicles to use either a dry wipe process or a wet wash that collects and contains wash water for proper off-site management.

n Provide cover for contaminants such as oil, chemicals, batteries, tires, salt storage piles, and trash that are stored outside.

n Keep containers and dumpsters closed and in good condition.

n Keep exterior areas clean by promptly addressing spills, keeping parking lots free of debris, and keeping stormwater catch basins and drains clear.

n Apply pesticides and fertilizers with precision and restraint.

If you would like more information, refer to the Stormwater Environmental Compliance Bulletin at blue.usps.gov/sustainability/environmental/_pdf/ecb-sw-management.pdf.
